Founded in the 9th century, Prague (Czech: Praha) is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. Situated on the Vltava river in central Bohemia, it is home to approximately 1.2 million people. From 1939, when the country was occupied by Nazi Germany, and during World War II, most Jews either fled Prague or were killed in the Holocaust. In 1968, the Soviet army invasion was meant to repress the Prague Spring revolution. Prague froze from 1968 to 1989, when the communist regime fell. Prague was the center of the Velvet Revolution. Prague today is a vibrant tourist attraction, and an integral part of central Europe. Learn more about Prague |
